The Yellow-eyed Penguin The Yellow-eyed Penguin inhabits the south-east coast of New Zealand's south island. They are amazing birds, standing at about 50-65 cms tall, and weighing in at about 5 - 8 kilograms. The maori name for this bird is tavora or hoiho, which translates to "shouts noise". They have a grey/blue body, and a yellow forehead. Their chest or belly is white. Hence the name, these penguins have a yellow iris. |
Amazing Fact: The yellow-eyed penguin can live up to 20 years! They feed on small fish or squid which they usually find close to the shore. They are solitary birds, so much so in fact, that they will build their nests out of sight of other penguins. They will often live slightly inland amongst trees and bushes, rather than living in colonies in the open. The yellow-eyed penguin does not have many natural predators, but barracuda and sea lions will feed on them if given the opportunity. Unnatural predators, or introduced species such as dogs, cats, stoats and ferrets are also a predator of these amazing penguins. The female penguin will lay an average of two eggs in September or October. These are incubated for 40-50 days until two chicks are born.
